Dangers of Limewire and other File Sharing Software

Tips from 3CWare Computer Repair

I am surprised at how many computers have the file sharing software, Limewire  installed. Limewire is a peer-to-peer file program that allows you to share folders on your computer and is often used to download “free” music, movies and software.

This kind of sharing is very dangerous!    Many parents are not even aware of what Limewire and others programs like it can do.  Anything in that folder can be downloaded by anyone anywhere.  Technically, you could share your entire hard drive.

How is this Dangerous?

You may have secure documents such as copies of your tax returns with social security numbers on it, scans of birth certificates, loan documents etc.  These would be easily accessible to other computers with file sharing software such as Limewire.

Downloading or sharing copyrighted music and video files is illegal, plain and simple.  I don’t know of any copyrighted popular music ,  movies or games that is free.  In fact, the music and movie industries have made it a point to go after people who share and illegally download music.  Many unsuspecting parents have been put in situations where they were forced to settle in court for thousands of dollars after being sued by the recording industry.

Another danger that exists are music and video files infected with viruses.  Someone could search for a movie or song, download it and try to play the file only to have a virus installed on your computer.  These viruses can do all sorts of nasty things to your computer– the main effect being that your computer is slowed to a crawl.

What can I do to fix this?

Call a computer technician to look at your computer if you suspect that your computer is infected.  If your computer is running slowly and you have Limewire or some other file sharing software installed, then you most likely have Malware or a viurs.  Do not hesitate to get your computer looked at.    Most computer repair companies charge nothing to check for viruses.

Be aware and alert about what is installed on your computer.  Being aware will save you time and frustration!
